Employee Training and Development

The County maintains an educated workforce. We want our employees versed in the latest job-related technologies, practice and principles.

Cabarrus provides several free opportunities onsite through: 

  • Human Resources
  • The Library System
  • Information Technology Services (ITS)

Cabarrus County supports continuing education through professional memberships and trainings.

Select positions offer opportunities for employees to earn certifications related to their jobs.

Classroom Training

Cabarrus County offers onsite training for employees on a variety of topics, including:

  • Microsoft Office products
  • Supervisor boot camp
  • Supervisor training
  • Program/Benefit updates
  • Lunch-and-learn programs (wellness, healthy eating, advanced directives, etc.)

Independent Learning: Job-Related Training and Certifications

If needed for an employee's current role, the County may allow for training. Cabarrus sponsors or provides job-related training, including certification preparation courses.

The County pays for certification test expenses for a job-related certification first test. If the employee is not successful, they must pay for retesting expenses. The County will reimburse the testing expense for the final, successful test.

Reimbursement for Tuition

A full time non-probationary employee is eligible for reimbursement of college courses. The courses must better equip the employee for their assigned duties. The County may reimburse the employee for:

  • tuition and course fees up to $500 per semester
  • not to exceed $1,000 each fiscal year
  • subject to available funds in the established budget for this program

Sheriff Education Incentive

Cabarrus offers an educational incentive to Sheriff’s Office employees in sworn positions:

  • Deputy Sheriff or above
  • Detention Officer in the jail

These employees must be acquiring a degree in Criminal Justice after hire. The County pays the annual incentive as follows: 

  • Associate Degree: $870
  • Bachelor Degree: $1,740

To receive this incentive:

  • the employee must present the degree
  • the department must complete Personnel Status Request (PSR)

The County adds the amount above to the employee pay as a pay type. This incentive is only available for:

  • Criminal Justice or a related field of study as approved by the Sheriff
  • an accredited institution of higher learning

Bilingual Incentives

Cabarrus County offers a language incentive for employees who provide translation services. These services can be provided within their own department or to other areas. Business need must dictate request for these services.

Employees are eligible for an annual incentive of $1,200 added to their salary.  To receive this incentive the employee must pass an oral proficiency exam. The County pays for this exam. The employee must pass the exam at an advanced or superior level in the identified language.

The employee must retest every three years to verify language capability.
