Everyday Energy Conservation

Energy conservation refers to efforts made to reduce energy consumption. Energy conservation can be achieved through increased efficient energy use,in conjunction with decreased energy consumption and/or reduced consumption from conventional energy sources. Energy conservation is a "win - win" practice. Not only does using less energy save money, but it helps towards improving our local air quality. Using less energy means less fossil fuels that power plants need to produce energy. The burning of these fossil fuels contribute towards air and water pollution.

Cabarrus County practices energy conservation in all of its facilities. Here are some examples:

  • Replacing T-12 fluorescent lights with more energy efficient T-8 fluorescent lights.
  • Use of compact fluorescent lights (CFL's) and light emitting diode lighting (LED's).
  • Installation of motion sensors in certain areas.
  • Implementation of an automated computer shutdown system.
  • Applying "Turn Off Lights" stickers on light switch plates.
  • Automated Heating, Venting and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems allows better control of temperatures in County buildings.
  • Charting energy usage in all County buildings and establishing energy reduction targets.

We are seeing positive results. In 2007, the Cabarrus County Governmental Center's average monthly electricity usage was 170,000 kWh. Today, it's only 123,000 kWh.
