Zoning Permitting

Zoning affects every structure and land use in Cabarrus County.

Except in compliance with the Development Ordinance:

  • No structure shall be erected, reconstructed, moved or altered
  • No land shall be used or developed

Zoning Division staff issue zoning permits. These permits ensure compliance with applicable zoning district development standards.

Examples of residential projects that require zoning permits are:

  • Constructing a new home
  • Adding on to your current home
  • Building an accessory structure (garage, storage building, gazebo, etc.)
  • Adding on to an existing accessory structure
  • Installing a carport
  • Installing a swimming pool
  • Installing a deck or patio
  • Adding on to a deck or patio
  • Operating a home based business
  • Constructing an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU)
