Stuart Valzonis was named on Monday to fill the vacant seat on the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners.

Following the board's receipt of the selection in accordance with state law, Valzonis will be sworn in at the board’s Regular Meeting on Nov. 16.

Valzonis, selected by the Cabarrus County Republican Party Executive Committee, will fill the seat vacated by Larry Pittman’s resignation in September.

Valzonis has served as the planning director for the Town of Dallas, NC, since 2025. Previously, he served as a planner for the City of Charlotte and the Town of Stallings.

He holds a master’s degree in business administration from UNC Pembroke and a Bachelor of Science degree in geography and urban planning from UNC Charlotte.

He served six years in the National Guard, including a deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Inherent Resolve from 2016 to 2017.

He is married to Megan Valzonis, a U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey player who competed in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

The couple has one son.

“Young families deserve leaders who understand the challenges they face,” Valzonis said in his letter of interest for the role. “They need access to affordable homes, safe communities in which to raise their children and the freedom to make decisions about their children’s education and future. Local governments should work to create an environment where families can put down roots and raise children according to their values. That means being responsible with their tax dollars, protecting private property and maintaining safe communities. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, it is that simple.”

Valzonis says his background gives him a strong understanding of the complexities of local government.

“My work involves land-use policy, development activity, infrastructure and the needs of the community I serve,” he said in the letter. “It requires collaboration with people who have differing priorities and concerns. I understand that good governance requires more than good intentions. It requires sound judgement, accountability, transparency and the willingness to stand firm on principle.”

Per state statute (NCGS 153A-27.1), the Cabarrus County Republican Party’s Executive Committee had 30 days to recommend a replacement following Pittman’s resignation. The law states that the replacement must be from the same party.

With the recommendation received, commissioners are required to appoint the nominee to serve the remainder of the term, which ends in November 2028.

“I want to help ensure that Cabarrus County remains a place where families feel safe, parents retain the freedom to raise their children according to their convictions and future generations have the opportunity to build a good life,” Valzonis said in his letter.

Valzonis joins the board in a pivotal time, as the County has started budget planning for the upcoming fiscal year. The board’s annual budget retreat is scheduled for February 2027.
