A national program that promotes reading to children ages 0-5. Reading to children early and often improves pre-literacy skills and word knowledge. Reading is great bonding time between parents and children too. Cabarrus County Public Library has adopted the program. We've also integrated the five “Every Child Ready to Read” pillars. These pillars provide a full range of activities and themes. Reading, writing, singing, playing and talking foster lifelong learning.
This program is for children between the ages of 0 and 5, and their caregivers. Every child in this age range is welcome to participate!
This program is always open to new participants! The only set deadline is reaching 1,000 books read before the child reaches Kindergarten. Once enrolled in the program, you can participate at a pace that best suits your child’s needs. Track your progress online, through the Beanstack app, or manually.
Parents and caregivers can sign their children up for the program online. They can also sign their children up through the Beanstack app. If they do not wish to participate online, they can sign up in person at any library location. After sign up, they can pick up a folder of materials to help them along the way. These items are optional and free, and will also be available to view or print online.
What will children gain by participating? How will this benefit parents/family members as well?
A child's brain develops most rapidly during the first 2-3 years of life. Reading to them during that time is a significant component of:
- literacy development
- language skills
- critical thinking abilities
- fostering creativity and imagination
These are all indicators of future academic success!
Once a child reaches the 500 books milestone, they are eligible to pick up a prize bag at the library! Families who finish the program and reach 1,000 books get invited to a special event. The invitation is for a special, annual celebration recognizing achievement and hard work.
Reading a book daily can help forge strong bonds between caregivers and children. When babies and young children get comforted by their parents voices, these bonds are clear.
How can Cabarrus County Public Library help us reach 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten?
There are a million ways to reach 1,000 books, and the library is here to help you find them! The library has an endless variety of books to read in different formats (e-books, books with audio, print books, launchpads, etc.). Library staff are here to support you:
- Librarians can help guide you to books that work best for your family

- encourage you along the way
We have book bundles for families who need to grab a variety of books on the go. People want book selections tailored for them, but don’t have the time or ability to come in to consult with staff. If that's the case, you can complete a takeout order online and library staff will pull items for you.
