Mental health event details systems, struggles and support

What do you do when you need help and can’t get it? Imagine how frustrating, confusing and isolating that might feel.
For many who are navigating mental health or developmental disability systems, it’s an everyday reality.
On Thursday, October 23 from 1 to 4 p.m., community members are invited to step into that experience at the Mental Health Simulation and Panel Discussion, held at the Cabarrus Milestone Campus (4855 Milestone Ave, Kannapolis).
Each attendee will receive a character profile and move through a series of real-world obstacles that lets them experience the barriers, frustrations and emotional toll many people encounter in their search for mental health support.
The goal is to reveal the gaps between services, funding and real needs, according to Cabarrus Behavioral Health Director Dr. Kamilah McKissick. Organizers also aim to inspire solutions that make accessing mental health care easier for everyone.
“We are excited to bring this event to Cabarrus,” McKissick said. “We hope it will help people understand what it’s like to get mental health support and give them a chance to ask questions. We look forward to seeing our community learn, connect and work together for change.”
Following the simulation, attendees will take part in a panel discussion and Q&A featuring impacted families and leaders in the mental health community, including Kelly Crosbie, Director of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Use Services (DMH/DD/SUS).
Sponsored by Monarch and Healthy Blue BCBS, the event is a collaborative effort among Cabarrus County Behavioral Health Department, Cabarrus County Government, Support Incorporated, PARTNERS (Cabarrus Community Collaborative), NAMI Cabarrus and Amazing Grace Advocacy.
Complimentary refreshments will be provided.
Free registration is required and spots are limited. Reserve your spot at bit.ly/cabcomh.
