These days, more people are turning to content creation. Now a Cabarrus County library branch is offering a new service for library cardholders to explore the world of podcasting.

The library branch at Afton Ridge recently introduced podcast equipment for patrons. The equipment set includes an audio mixing board, three microphones and three pairs of headphones. The branch offers two equipment sets that can be borrowed for up to two hours. Use is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Afton Branch Manager Debra Schmitzer says her staff saw a need when reservations for their private rooms increased. The library offers two soundproof “tech” rooms and six study rooms. Patrons were using the rooms to record podcast content on their phones and laptops.

“I thought it was the perfect fit,” Schmitzer says. “As library staff, our purpose is to provide for the community’s needs when they can’t provide it for themselves.

Harrisburg resident Kyle King is getting plenty of equipment use. King is the creator and host of the Contagious Culture podcast, which he now fully records at the library.

The podcast launched in King’s home but soon moved to the tech/study rooms. He, too, was recording his content with his phone and laptop.

When Schmitzer recognized the need for equipment, King helped her find quality, cost-effective options.

“It made me feel like my voice was heard as a Cabarrus County resident and that they are doing things that the community needs,” King says.

He credits the service with helping revive his podcast and increase his reach.

“Our goal for 2026 was to impact 100,000 non-profit leaders around the world,” King says. “We wouldn’t have been able to do that without the access this library provides. Coming here and having the space, equipment and an amazing team to help you utilize the technology and encourage you to keep going is just amazing.”

Schmitzer says the equipment and space provide a chance for residents to try something new.

“Podcasting is a huge right now … why not come and use the equipment to get that crisp, clear recording,” she says. “The libraries are here for you, and we want you to visit and use our facilities.”

Library cards are free to Cabarrus County residents (ages 5 and up), Rowan County residents, Cabarrus County Government employees and Cabarrus County students and educators. A picture ID and official document with proof of address is required at card pickup.

Any eligible non-residents listed above must bring proof of employment/enrollment (such as a school ID). Youth cards (ages 5-17) must be linked to a legal guardian’s card, who assumes responsibility for those materials. The child must be present when the card is picked up.

Non-residents can get a card for a $25 annual fee.

In addition to the Afton Ridge branch, other Cabarrus library locations include (Concord, Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Midland and Mt. Pleasant) that offer a wide variety of programs and services. For more information, call the branch directly at 704-920-2030 or visit www.cabarruscounty.us/Library
