Fair Housing

A component of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, the Fair Housing Act passed just one week after the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Legislators saw it as a way to "reunite our country and get back on a solid track". The 2018 video (above) marks the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. Housing leaders share the significance of the landmark legislation that called on equality in housing for "all human beings who live in this country".

The County has assured the NC Dept. of Commerce they will take action on Fair Housing. This action will be in the form of educational programs to further Fair Housing goals. This information is stated in Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968. This act was later amended by the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974.

In Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, Congress declared a national policy on Fair Housing. Title VIII was also known as the Fair Housing Act. The goal is to provide Fair Housing throughout the US. This law makes discrimination illegal based on:

  • race
  • color
  • religion
  • sex
  • national origin

This discrimination had to be in connection with the sale or rental of:

  • most housing
  • any vacant land offered for residential construction or use
