What is Sheltering?

Sheltering is providing temporary housing and essential services to those displaced by emergencies. Shelters provide a secure environment until individuals return home or to alternative arrangements.

When Shelters Are Available

Shelters are opened based on the type and severity of an emergency. Cabarrus County may activate shelters during:

  • Severe weather events
  • Extended power outages
  • Hazardous materials incidents
  • Other emergencies requiring evacuation or displacement

Types of Shelters

Cabarrus County may operate different types of shelters depending on the situation, including:

  • General population shelters
  • Medical support shelters for individuals with functional or access needs
  • Pet-friendly shelters (as available)

Items Allowed at Shelters

Residents are encouraged to bring essential personal items, including:

  • Medications and medical supplies
  •  Identification and important documents
  • Clothing, bedding, and personal hygiene items
  • Comfort items such as pillows or small personal belongings

Note: Weapons, illegal items and alcohol are not permitted in shelters.

Residents are notified of evacuations and shelter openings through Cabarrus communication channels, including:

  • County website and social media platforms
