September is Library Card Sign-up Month and the Cabarrus County Public Library System is joining with the American Library Association and libraries nationwide to encourage parents, caregivers and students to obtain a free library card.
Libraries play an important role in the education and development of children. Studies show children who are read to in the home and who use library services perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
Cabarrus County Library cards provide a gateway to a wealth of information, including:
- STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) resources
- Educational apps
- In-person and virtual homework help
- Technology workshops
“Throughout the school year, our library offers a variety of programs to stimulate an interest in reading and learning,” said Library Director Emery Ortiz. “Storytimes develop literacy, introduce young children to the joy of reading and encourage school readiness. Older children have access to technology programs and digital tools like computer coding classes and scholarly databases, and can receive help from library staff on how to use those resources.”
Hoopla at the Library
Library Card Sign-up Month coincides with the release of Hoopla, a digital entertainment lending service.
Beginning in September, adult patrons can check out up to four items per month, including television shows, movies, audio books, music albums and more. With Hoopla, there are no wait times or late fees. Hoopla is a great tool for book clubs, teachers, community groups and more, Ortiz said. The Hoopla Digital app is also available in app stores and on most streaming devices.
To sign up for a library card, access the online catalog or view a full event schedule, visit a Cabarrus library branch or go online at www.cabarruscounty.us/library.
