Cabarrus Summer Reading Events, July 8-13

Blast off with the Cabarrus County Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is 'A Universe of Stories.' The program divides participants into groups—birth to 5 years old, 6 to 12 years old, 12 to 18 years old, and adult—with age-appropriate programs, performers and events. The program continues through August 17.

Register online and print reading logs or register and collect reading logs at any branch of the Cabarrus County Public Library System. View the 2019 Summer Reading Program events.

July 8

May the force be with you

10 a.m. - 11 a.m., Concord (27 Union St N), Ages 10 and up

Investigate what energy is and what forms it takes. Explore air pressure and gravity, magnetism and electricity. Test your knowledge with magnetism and circuit challenges. Presented by Cabarrus County Active Living and Parks.

3:30 - 5 p.m., Concord (27 Union St N), Ages 5-12

Don’t slip on the “summer slide.” Drop in to practice your reading fluency and comprehension with a teen tutor. You’ll travel at warp 9.9 before the end of summer.

What’s your sign? Make it known through cross-stitch at the library. All materials provided.

July 9

Galaxy tie-dye

3 p.m., Concord (27 Union St N), Ages 12-17

Make a DIY tie-dye galaxy shirt. Please bring a plain, preferably white, T-shirt that you can dye. Dress in clothes appropriate for messy situations.

Satellites, galaxies and nebulas...Oh my!

3 p.m., Kannapolis (850 Mountain St), Ages 5-12

What’s all the “Hubble” about? Learn what the Hubble Space Telescope has discovered in outer space and along the far edges of the universe. Then, make a mini galaxy in a jar to take home.

4:30 - 5:30 p.m., Midland (4297 NC Hwy 24-27) , Ages 4-12

Are you ready to squish, knead and create new things? Join us for Play-Doh lab. We provide the supplies--you provide the fun and imagination.

Rocket through space

Learn about the solar system, play Solar System Bingo and create your own rocket.

Camping under the stars

What could be better than camping under the stars? Our day will “sparkle” as we tell campfire stories, play games that are out of this world and create constellation crafts.

Complete your advance directive

Learn how to review and complete healthcare power of attorney and living will forms at this drop-in workshop. Free notarization of advance directive forms, as well as guidance on what to do with them once they are complete. Most people spend 45 minutes at the event. Presented by Atrium Health.

Far out film matinee

11-1 p.m., Mt. Pleasant (8556 Cook St), All Ages

Get out of your normal orbit and watch a classic, space-themed film, featuring a famous UNC-Chapel Hill and Chicago Bulls athlete.

Visit the library to hear local music from Coddle Creek. The band plays high-energy creekgrass—traditional bluegrass with a kick—that features sweet harmonies and dueling acoustic guitars.

A fantastic medley of comic mayhem that stars the hapless Professor Whizzpop. The professor’s myriad of mishandled magic provides giggles galore. Co-sponsored by Kannapolis Parks and Recreation.
