Cabarrus Summer Reading Events, July 22-27

Blast off with the Cabarrus County Public Library System’s Summer Reading Program. This year’s theme is 'A Universe of Stories.' The program divides participants into groups—birth to 5 years old, 6 to 12 years old, 12 to 18 years old, and adult—with age-appropriate programs, performers and events. The program continues through August 17.

Register online and print reading logs or register and collect reading logs at any branch of the Cabarrus County Public Library System. View the 2019 Summer Reading Program events.

July 22

Coding camp

11 a.m., Concord (27 Union St N), Ages 7-12

Coders will learn the basics as they work through a different project each day. Registration is required for each of the daily one-hour sessions.

Read at lightspeed

3:30 - 5 p.m., Concord (27 Union St N), Ages 5-12

Don’t slip on the “summer slide.” Drop in to practice your reading fluency and comprehension with a teen tutor. You’ll travel at warp 9.9 before the end of summer.

Story Circus

Magic storyteller Yasu Ishida presents Story Circus. Stories will come to life through balloon animals, origami and magic tricks. At the end of the show, kids will learn a trick of their own.

Bilingual music with Alina Celeste

3 p.m., Mt. Pleasant (8556 Cook St), Family

Alina Celeste presents a bilingual musical performance featuring her trademark blend of classic folk songs from the United States, Caribbean and Latin America, and a few original songs, too.

Get crafty with chalk couture (RR)

3 p.m., Concord (27 Union St N), Ages 13 and up

Create and take home your own chalkboard creation with Tracy Lillie of Lillie Design.

It’s just a phase

3 p.m., Kannapolis (850 Mountain St), Ages 5-12

Who keeps taking a bite out of the moon? Come find out as we explore the phases of the moon through stories, video and interactive play. Participants will also make an out-of-this-world mobile.

Spark Joy Workshop

Take a deep dive into the KonMari Method at this free workshop. Shannon Huneycutt, owner of Spark Joy Charlotte and a certified KonMari consultant trained by Marie Kondo, will present on the overall philosophy of sparking joy in your home. Attendees will leave with inspiration to get started on their KonMari journey when they return home.

Camping under the stars

10:30 a.m., Mt. Pleasant (8556 Cook St), Ages 5-12

What could be better than camping under the stars? Our day will “sparkle” as we tell campfire stories, play games that are out of this world and create constellation crafts.

There’s a lot of stress that comes with being a teen. Teen stress can even rival the stress adults feel. Learn how to cope using a variety of active mindfulness techniques. Dress comfortably.

Science Fiction in Space

3 p.m., Concord (27 Union St N), Ages 5-12

What do aliens, hyper-drives and time travel have in common? They’re science fiction. Learn the difference between science and science fiction, and make your own out of this world spaceship to take home.

Satellites, Galaxies and Nebulas...Oh My

4:30 p.m., Midland (4297 NC Hwy 24-27), Ages 5-12

What’s all the “Hubble” about? Learn what the Hubble Space Telescope has discovered in outer space and along the far edges of the universe. Then, make a mini galaxy in a jar to take home.

Creative Writing for Teens

5:30 p.m., Mt. Pleasant (8556 Cook St), Ages 12-20

Learn how to take an idea and transform it to a beautifully written work. This monthly workshop equips young writers with the tools to develop their inner writer, including story prompts, poetry tips and group critiques.
