Blast off this summer at the Cabarrus County Public Library System

The Cabarrus County Public Library System launches the 2019 Summer Reading Program for children and adults alike.

The summer-long initiative seeks to encourage summer reading, education, and retention through programs, performers, and events around a centralized theme. This year’s program runs through Saturday, Aug. 17 and the theme is A Universe of Stories.

Any Cabarrus County resident can participate. The program divides participants into groups—birth to 5 years old, 6 to 12 years old, 12 to 18 years old, and adult—with age-appropriate activities.

During the two months of the program, participants can qualify for a prize by logging various activities. Each person can submit up to three activity logs for a prize of their choice. Each log lists age-appropriate suggestions. Activities include reading, listening to an eBook, visiting a museum, playing games, attending a library program and more.

Originally, summer reading helped kids avoid the summer slide. According to the Reading is Fundamental website, the summer slide happens when minds stop learning over the summer. Children who do not read over the summer will lose up to three months of reading achievement. By the end of fifth grade, children who lose reading skills over the summer are three years behind their classmates.

Today, summer reading has something for children, teens and adults. Not just about reading, the program encourages people to use the public library as a gateway to lifelong learning, creativity and exploration. It includes literacy-based hands-on activities and fun events. Last year, more than 3,100 children, more than 500 teens and more than 1,400 adults participated in the Summer Reading Program.
