Breakdown of Cabarrus County’s major construction projects
Nov. 26, 2013 — Over the next few months, several Cabarrus County Government sites will undergo planned renovations. Major projects currently underway include renovations to the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter, Cabarrus County Senior Center in Concord, demolition of the 1986 addition to the former Cabarrus County Jail, and renovations to the Courthouse Annex and parking lot.
A breakdown of these projects is as follows:
Cabarrus County Animal Shelter
Location: 244 Betsy Carpenter Place, Concord
Dates: October - early December

Renovations to the Cabarrus County Animal Shelter will conclude in the first week of December. Cabarrus County General Services staff is installing epoxy flooring, replacing ceiling tiles and grids, and painting the shelter’s walls. While renovations take place, Animal Control and Cabarrus County Humane Society operations have moved to temporary locations.
The Cabarrus County Senior Center is in the midst of a major renovation that will add 1,141 square feet to the building. The renovation will add group exercise rooms, expand the fitness room and renovate several learning classrooms. It will also add two restrooms and a fire hydrant.
Former Cabarrus County Jail, Courthouse Annex and parking lot
Location: 77 Union Street South, Concord
Dates: November 25 - Mid 2014
Traffic implications: Some project work will affect Church Street and Corban Avenue. Perimeter fences will affect some sidewalk access in the area.

The duration of the project could last up to nine months. The scope of the project includes demolition of the 1986 addition to the former Cabarrus County Jail and renovations to the Courthouse Annex and parking lot. The Annex renovation will add offices for courthouse security and Guardian Ad Litem, and secured file storage areas for the Clerk of Court and District Attorney offices. A secured parking area for judges, district attorneys and staff will be added adjacent to the Courthouse Annex.
