Changes to Food Assistance Benefits—Effective, Nov. 1

Oct. 31, 2013 -- Effective Nov. 1, 2013, Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) recipients will experience a reduction in benefits. The change is taking place because a temporary measure to increase benefits through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (Stimulus Act) will expire on Oct. 31.

This is a federally-mandated decrease in FNS benefits. The average decrease is 5.4%, which means the average household of four will experience a projected decrease of $36 per month.

Households that receive Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) allotments will also experience a reduction in benefits.

FNS clients can check their EBT card balances as listed on your last grocery receipt or call the toll-free number on the back of your EBT card.

For more information on the change, visit the USDA or N.C. Department of Health and Human Services websites.
