July 26, 2013 – Beginning Aug. 1, the Kannapolis Recycling Convenience Center located behind the Cabarrus County Department of Human Services, 1303 S. Cannon Blvd., will close. The Rowan County Recycling Center located at 614 W. 8th.is also scheduled to close temporarily while the Rowan County Board of Commissioners considers a schedule for permanent closure.
The Cabarrus County-operated convenience center opened in 1998. Since that time, Kannapolis has adopted a city-operated curbside-recycling program that has reduced the need for the common facility.
The majority of waste currently disposed of at the site does not qualify as household recyclable materials. Cabarrus made the decision to curb illegal dumping at the site before it created health and safety issues for residents and employees.
The City of Kannapolis will continue its curbside-recycling program. The City of Kannapolis also offers drop-off e-waste recycling at the Department of Public Works, 1401 Bethpage Rd., Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Residents can call the Public Works Office at 704-920-4200 to schedule an appointment on Fridays to drop-off oversized/bulky electronics recyclables.
Cabarrus County will continue to operate two countywide recycling convenience centers. The Cabarrus County Construction and Demolition Landfill, 4441 Irish Potato Rd., is open Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and Saturday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Cabarrus County Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 246 General Services Dr., is open Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., and the third Saturday of each month between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.
