They are trained to handle, use and safely dispose explosives when called upon. The inception of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad began with one officer responding to any bomb or explosive device type call for the entire agency. The early years of the bomb squad were under the control of a single officer who was a military EOD officer prior to working with the Sheriff’s Office. He handled this type of call from the 1970’s into the late 1990’s. In 1998 Sheriff Canaday formed the first Certified Bomb Unit by sending two sworn officers to Hazardous Device School (HDS) in Huntsville, Alabama for a 6 week training. From that time, as the type of events and calls this squad has been called upon to work, the unit has expanded to eight members, made of Certified Bomb Techs as well as Bomb Squad Assistants.
The intent of the squad has been to have two full squads to be able to respond to calls in our county and the region that the bomb squad covers. This region includes the counties of Cabarrus, Iredell, Rowan, Stanly and Union. A squad includes two Bomb Technicians and two assistants per squad. The squad responds to suspicious packages or devices, found grenades and weapons and also works special events such as the NASCAR Events at Charlotte Motor Speedway. They often work with Federal Agencies such as the ATF and FBI and other regional Bomb Squads. The Bomb Squad Commander is Deputy Jason Yount and falls under the supervision of the Governmental Support Services Captain.
