The Crime Scene Investigations Unit consist of a unit Sergeant, Crime Scene Investigators, Sex Offender Registrars, a Crime Stoppers liaison and a civilian property and evidence technician.
Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Investigators are sworn law enforcement personnel, who apply extensive training and experience to the documentation and analysis of a crime scene. They collect and analyze evidence such as latent fingerprints, foot and tire impressions, blood splatter, and many other elements of a crime scene to piece together what occurred, the sequence of events, and how long ago they transpired.
Cabarrus County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene investigators also process and/or analyze several types of evidence. Investigators obtain spent shell casings from seized firearms, then submit the casings to be entered into the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network (NIBIN) for comparison. Investigators also use the Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS), to compare latent fingerprint evidence. The ability to analyze latent prints in-house eliminates the need to outsource this process, expediting results.
Sex Offender Registrars are sworn personnel, who oversee the compliance of offenders within Cabarrus County’s jurisdiction, specifically, those offenders who are required to register as Sex Offenders in the State of North Carolina. The registrars investigate potential violations of NC Sex Offender laws and work closely with NC Probation Officers and the District Attorney’s office to bring violators to justice.
The Crime Stoppers Liaison is responsible for the monitoring of incoming Crime Stoppers tips. The tip(s) are then shared with the appropriate investigating group within the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office. The liaison shares statistics, intel, and strategies through regular meetings with the Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers board and liaisons from the Kannapolis Police Department and Concord Police Department.
The civilian Property and Evidence technician governs the intake, storage, release, and court ordered disposition of all property and evidence received by the agency.
