Water…The Cycle of Life

1st Place 5th Grade Abigail Brewer031713.jpgMarch 25, 2013 -- Conservation is key to our survival and talented students from across Cabarrus County also made it pretty cool. More than 1,200 students participated in four contests that encourage informed and responsible use of the Earth's natural resources. The competition, sponsored locally by the Cabarrus Soil and Water Conservation District, has a unique theme each year. This year's theme is “Water…The Cycle of Life.” Students were asked to submit creative posters, essays, computer slide shows and public speeches that worked to advance the public’s understanding of water conservation.

At its February 18 meeting, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners recognized the students' work and celebrated their inspirational words and drawings.

Several winners of the Cabarrus County contest moved on to the regional competition and placed against students from Anson, Cleveland, Davidson, Davie, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Stanly and Union counties.

First-places awards in the regional round went to Abigail Brewer, Patriots Elementary, fifth-grade poster contest; and Hannah Monroe, Concord Middle, seventh-grade public speaking contest. Second-place awards in the regional round went to Elijah Crisco, Jackson Park Elementary, third-grade poster contest; Laney Gragg, Jackson Park Elementary, fourth-grade poster contest; and Olivia Reiff, Concord Middle, eighth-grade public speaking contest. Third-place awards in the regional round went to Caroline Beers, Harris Road Middle, sixth-grade poster contest; and Rosalind Diefenbach, JN Fries Magnet, sixth-grade essay contest.

First-place award winners at the regional competition will move on to compete in the state competition in May.
