Try Local Food, Learn Gardening Tips and Get Moving at Live It Up Cabarrus

Food lovers, gardening gurus, fitness enthusiasts – and all those who would like to be – are invited to the Live It Up! Cabarrus festival at Frank Liske Park from 2-5 pm Saturday, April 2. This family-friendly event offers hands-on demonstrations and helpful tips to encourage healthy living and strengthen our ties to nutritious locally produced food.

Through live demonstrations and engaging activities, festival-goers can meet local food growers and producers, sample and vote for your favorite recipe featuring local food products, learn backyard gardening and composting tips, experiment with cooking techniques, and explore fun and inexpensive fitness activities for all age groups.

Festival-goers also can learn about and pledge to participate in the statewide 10% Campaign. The campaign is an effort to encourage North Carolina consumers to spend 10 percent of their food dollars on foods from local sources. Through registration on the campaign website – www.nc10percent.com - consumers and business will pledge to spend 10 percent of their food dollars locally, purchasing products from area farmers and food producers. Sign up will be available at the festival.

To encourage more active lifestyles, the Live It Up! Cabarrus festival will highlight fitness activities available to children and adults. And festival-goers can sign up for the All-County Fitness Challenge by earning points for participating in various activities at city and county parks, such as disc golf, trail walking, fishing, playing basketball, and other activities.

In addition, a 3K Road Race Run/Walk will be held in conjunction with the festival. The race begins at 2 pm with the course starting and ending on the perimeter trail of the park. Pre-registration fees are $15 for the 3K Run and $8 for the 3K Walk. The first 150 paid participants will receive an official Live It Up! Cabarrus T-shirt. All participants will receive a free pass for one game of mini golf. To sign up for the 3K road race, visit www.cabarruscounty.us/parks/roadraces.html.

A Mini Golf Tournament will be held during the Live It Up! Cabarrus festival. Two-person teams will compete. There are no age requirements. Awards will be given to individuals with the lowest scores per age division. There is no cost to participate.
