March 5, 2014 -- Senior Health and Wellness Day (SHWD) is one of the region's largest open house events for seniors. The FREE event takes place Wednesday, March 12, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Cabarrus Arena, (4751 Highway 49 North, Concord.) The day offers a host of health and wellness information for seniors and caregivers--all under one roof. Preregistration is not required for most activities.

Seniors can enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and explore the event at their own pace. SHWD provides a unique opportunity to access a wealth of information, resources and programs for senior adults and caregivers. Attendees can speak with representatives from Cabarrus County's Active Living and Parks and Human Services departments about programs and services offered to seniors, participate in free health screenings, socialize and meet with vendors who can help with individual needs.

As they walk in the door, attendees are greeted by senior volunteers who register guests and enter them into the grand prize drawing. With goodie bag in hand, attendees can then continue their journey through 60 exhibit spaces that offer information on healthy foods, including smoothie and healthy snack tastings; activities, like gardening; information on assisted living and wills; guides for proper footwear; and much more. The booths also have individual giveaways and door prizes.

Attendees also won’t want to miss the engaging class demos, where they can experience several of the activities offered at Cabarrus County's senior centers in Concord and Mount Pleasant. On-site demonstrations include ballroom dancing, Tai Chi and aerobics.

The screening area gives older adults the opportunity to receive health screenings at no cost. Seniors can participate in blood pressure screenings and receive a hearing, vision and skin check. Fitness and fall assessments, and information on how to dispose of outdated medical supplies are also available.

If you are due for a mammography check, sign up in advance for a free test in the mammography van. To learn more or to schedule a mammography appointment at SHWD, call 704-403-1729.

SHWD also includes a free grilled chicken sandwich lunch with the fixings from Punchy's Diner for all seniors who workup an appetite.
