Cabarrus County announces recent hires to fill two key staff positions. Kasia Thompson joins Cabarrus County as Communications and Outreach Manager, and Megan Smit has been appointed Clerk to the Board.
Communications and Outreach Manager
Kasia Thompson began her role as Communications and Outreach Manager on October 22. She is responsible for media relations, crisis communications, community outreach, public information, website content management, social media and communication planning to support all Cabarrus County departments. As a member of the Communications and Outreach Department, Thompson also will contribute to Channel 22 television programming and video projects.
Thompson has 10 years’ experience in communications coordination in the non-profit and government sectors. Most recently, Thompson was media relations specialist with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools where she handled media and public information requests, managed crisis issues, implemented communication strategies for major initiatives and coordinated website, social media and video projects. In addition, she worked two years with the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Foundation providing communications planning. Prior to that she served six years with the Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome Association of America, where she provided support with media relations, advertising, marketing, trade shows, special events and publications.
Thompson holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in advertising and public relations from the University of Central Florida in Orlando. She is involved in the Charlotte chapter of Public Relations Society of America serving as Director at Large of the Board of Directors during 2010-2012 and as Young Professionals Group Committee Chairperson during 2008-2009.
Clerk to the Board
Megan Smit was appointed Clerk to the Board by the Board of Commissioners at its October 8 meeting. As Clerk to the Board, Smit is responsible for coordinating meeting agendas and minutes and providing office management for the County Manager’s Office and Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners.
Smit joined Cabarrus County’s Revaluation Department in June 2011 and was later promoted to Business Personal Property Appraiser in the Assessor’s Office. She has experience with document and report management as well as proficiency with relevant office software applications and office duties.
Before joining Cabarrus County, Smit served part of a school year as a bilingual instructional assistant with Richland County Schools in Columbia, SC. She also volunteered as a high school English teacher at the English Language Institute of China in Wujin, China. In addition, she has two years’ experience in customer service and marketing support. Smit holds a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education history from Toccoa Falls College in Toccoa, Georgia.
