budget6-1.jpgJune 12, 2014 – At its regular meeting on Monday, June 16, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing on the FY15 budget at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting chambers of the Cabarrus County Government Center (65 Church Street SE, Concord).

At the May 19 Board of Commissioner meeting, County Manager Mike Downs presented the proposed FY15 general fund budget of $209.7 million – a 1.77 percent decrease in spending from the FY14 adopted budget. The budget will require the Board of Commissioners to adopt an ad valorem tax rate of 70 cents, the same as the adopted FY13 and FY14 budgets.

Highlights of the proposed FY15 budget include a reduction in departmental current expenses of approximately $2.7 million; a new branch of the Cabarrus County Public Library System in the Midland (southern Cabarrus) area and an additional Emergency Medical Service (EMS) station in the Concord Mills/Speedway area; additional $2,696,438 in proposed funding for annual salary increases and building maintenance for Cabarrus County and Kannapolis City school districts; workers compensation costs funded through the current expense budget; and the revision of the County’s Five Year Plan to provide additional capital and current expense funding to schools.

The Board of Commissioners held budget work sessions on May 27, 29 and June 2. At the sessions, County departments and outside organizations funded through the County budget presented their budget requests and answered commissioners' questions. At the June 2 work session, staff identified an additional $33,000 in reductions to the proposed budget.

According to North Carolina General Statutes, the Board of Commissioners must approve the County’s FY15 budget by June 30.

Other topics on the agenda of the June 16 meeting are a public hearing on proposed text amendments to zoning ordinance (TEXT2014-00004), NCDOT private Rail Crossing Closure, proposed funding for Kannapolis Middle School, introduction of General Obligation Bond Orders for schools and community college, update of the Construction and Renovation Fund Budget and update on small projects capital fund budget.
