At their Feb. 4 work session, the Cabarrus County Board of Commissioners approved moving forward to inform the public of a potential Cabarrus-Stanly county line resurvey. The North Carolina Geodetic Survey (NCGS) would complete the survey to address differences between where officials from both counties believe the line is located and develop a standard agreed-upon line, both on the ground and on assessment maps.
The complete process could take longer than two years to complete. The NCGS has contracted with Stewart Engineering of Charlotte, N.C., to resurvey the county line and establish its physical location on the ground. The physical location of the resurveyed line may vary from the lines currently used by the respective county tax offices. We will inform property owners of potential changes once results are determined. The counties will then present the results to their respective boards of commissioners, which will hold a public hearing and a vote. If approved by the boards, the state will review and vote on legislation to declare the resurveyed line official.
Officials in both counties understand the importance of clearly defining the boundary line and informing property owners with certainty of the county in which all, or portions, of their property lie. To keep residents informed on an ongoing basis, we have compiled several resources and scheduled public meetings to address the scope of the project. The resources include a map of the proposed county line in relation to individual properties, general information about the resurvey, a project timeline and videos related to the process.
