Handgun Purchase permits may be applied for in person at the Records Division of the Sheriff’s Office anytime Monday through Friday, 8 am - 5 pm.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, valid NCOL/ID, never had a Dishonorable Discharge or Dismissal from the armed forces. A criminal background check will be conducted on all Handgun Purchase Permit applicants (New and Updated applications). You will be required to provide three references, with day time phone numbers at the time of application. You may also be required to show proof of residency in Cabarrus County. Applications may take up to 30 days to process. All permits must be picked up in person, by the applicant, with a valid NC OL/ID with correct address information. Application will not be processed if address information provided is incorrect. Applicant must be a resident of Cabarrus County for thirty (30) days.
Applicants may submit up to one (1) application every 30 days, and may obtain up to five (5) permits per application.

A county Sheriff is only authorized under NCGS§14-402 to issue a permit to receive or purchase a handgun or crossbow when an application is submitted by a person who is a resident of his or her particular county. The sole exception is that the sheriff may issue a permit to a non-resident when the purpose is for collecting. (proof will be required)
