Handgun Purchase permits may be applied for in the Records Division of the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office anytime Monday through Friday, 8:00am - 5:00pm.
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age, valid NCOL/ ID, never had a Dishonorable Discharge or Dismissal from the armed forces. A criminal background check will be conducted on all Handgun Purchase Permit applicants (New and Updated applications). You will be required to provide three references, with day time phone numbers at the time of application. You may also be required to show proof of residency in Cabarrus County.(see below N.C. G. S. § 14-402)
A county Sheriff is only authorized under N.C.G.S. § 14-402 to issue a permit to receive or purchase a handgun or crossbow when an application is submitted by a person who is a resident of his or her particular county. The sole exception is that the sheriff may issue a permit to a non-resident when the purpose is for collecting. (proof of this will be required)
