"Wetlands are Wonderful” is the theme for the 2014–2015 annual computer designed poster, computer designed slide show, essay, poster and public speaking contests. In addition to the resources below, there is also a 3-ring binder entitled  “Resource Conservation Notebook” in each county library branch.

Cabarrus Soil & Water Conservation District encourages students in the County to participant in the annual essay, poster, slide show and public speaking contests.

Essay Contest

This annual event for students in the sixth grade was begun in 1992. The title of the contest rotates each year. Each participant receives a certificate of participation. The top three contestants are invited to read their essays at the annual public speaking contest in December, where the winners are announced and awarded cash prizes. The winning essay is entered in the regional essay contest, which is held in March. This annual event holds a state contest held in Raleigh in May, sponsored by the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Poster Contest

This annual event for students in grades 3–6 began in 1992. Posters are judged and awarded first, second and third place. Participants are invited to the annual Poster Contest, held in February, where winners receive a cash prize. Each participant receives a certificate of participation. Top posters in each grade advance to a regional contest held in March. This annual event has a state contest held in Raleigh in May, sponsored by the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Public Speaking Contest

This annual event for seventh and eighth grade students began in 1967. The title of the public speaking contest rotates annually. Each participant receives a certificate of participation. Each school is eligible to send one seventh and eighth grade representative to the annual contest in December. Cash prizes are awarded. The top speaker in both the seventh and eighth grade contest advance to a regional contest held in March. This annual event holds a state contest held in Raleigh in May, sponsored by the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

Computer Designed Slide Show Contest

This annual event for sixth grade students began in 2011. Each school is eligible to send one sixth grade entry. Cash prizes are awarded. The top entry advances to a regional contest held in March. The annual event has a state contest in Raleigh in May, sponsored by the NC Association of Soil & Water Conservation Districts.
