Candidate Qualifications

Qualifications for Election to Office 2010

Filing begins February 8, 2010 at 12:00 noon and ends February 26, 2010 at 12:00 noon, unless otherwise noted.

US Senator

6 years – Richard Burr’s seat

  • 30 Years of Age
  • 9 Years – citizen of the United States
  • Resident of the State for which he/she will be elected
  • Qualified voter of the State
  • 90 day member of his/her party preceding the filing date
  • Term of Office: 6 years – no limit

US Representative

8th Congressional – 2 years – Larry Kissell’s seat
12th Congressional – 2 years – Mel Watt’s seat

  • 25 Years of Age
  • 7 years – citizen of the United States
  • Qualified voter of the State
  • Resident of the state for which he/she will be elected
  • 90 day member of his/her party preceding filing date
  • Term of Office: 2 years – no limit

NC State Senator

36th Senatorial District – 2 years – Fletcher Hartsell’s seat

  • 25 Years of Age
  • Qualified voter of the State
  • 2 years citizen of the State
  • 1 year residency in district immediately preceding his/her election
  • 90 day member of his/her party preceding filing date
  • Term of Office: 2 years

NC State Representative

82nd House District – 2 years – Jeff Barnhart’s seat
83rd House District – 2 years – Linda Johnson’s seat

  • 21 Years of Age
  • Qualified voter of the State
  • 1 year residency in district immediately preceding his/her election
  • 90 day member of his/her party preceding filing date
