With a firm industrial and distribution base, Cabarrus has even more to offer. It is home to Concord Mills Mall, the #1 tourist destination in North Carolina and a catalyst for tremendous growth in the hospitality and commercial sectors. In the 2 miles between Lowes Motor Speedway complex and Concord Mills, you’ll find a convention center, two resort hotels, a golf course, 50 restaurants, and a total of 1,658 hotel rooms.
Cabarrus is also home to a number of quality parks, greenways and recreational facilities, enhancing the quality of life for residents and drawing regional and national athletic tournaments to the County.
An emerging sector in the Cabarrus economy is biotechnology. The North Carolina Research Campus focuses on nutrition and genetic research. This public–private partnership, still in its infancy, includes the presence of eight universities and several national and multi–national companies, including LabCorp, Lovelace, Anatomics, and Dole Foods.
Cabarrus has a strong tradition and commitment to serving its citizens. With 170,000 residents, the County offers a range of government services and programs, including public safety, social services, excellent schools, several libraries, parks and many programs for older adults.
Contending with a high rate of growth and development has brought the County to a new focus on the three balanced principles of sustainability: a healthy environment; a sound, conservative financial position; and social equity. This triple-bottom-line approach emphasizes conservation and prosperity.
The Board of Commissioners’ initiative to build a sustainable community consists of many efforts, including retrofits of county facilities to conserve energy and water, maximizing the prevalence of reusable products, minimizing the use of those that are disposable, and purchasing products that contain recycled content when possible and feasible. The County’s fleet of vehicles is much more fuel efficient and emits fewer emissions than in the past. In fact, Cabarrus County claims one of the largest fleets of hybrid vehicles in the state. These measures conserve natural resources and tax dollars.
The Board’s sustainable community initiative includes many outwardly directed elements: One is a multifaceted approach to developing a more robust local food economy. Another is the use of land use plans and regulations that direct development into the municipalities and encourage rural preservation in the unincorporated areas that lack infrastructure.
All these endeavors are in place to better ensure a sustainable way of life for the future.
